The Fool Card in all of it's splendor can mean many things, depending upon it's placement, the question at hand and the other cards surrounding it. The Fool card is the 1st card of the Major Arcana and the card that begins the story of the Tarot, the story being the Fools process to self-actualization (his "Nirvana"/"Heaven" or whatever you opt to call it). The Fool is happy and optimistic, he believes he's got everything under control and that things will "fall-in-to-place". The Fool is starting down a new path, he is aware of what he is doing but he falsely believes the results will suit him, regardless of circumstance.
The general meaning of the Fool card, or rather the keywords associated with it include:
*Naivety
*Disillusionment
*Deception, particularly if paired with or next to the 3 of Swords and a court card.
*Optimistic
*Opportunistic
The best place I believe for the Fool card to land is in the past position, the reason being that in the present and future position things aren't as "clear cut" as we'd hoped. When the Fool is in the past we see that the person getting the read has already experienced a....reality check, if you will, or in the best case scenario they're having a new founded sense of optimism in their life when in the present position, they may have just made a big decision, or they're about to.
In the present position the Fool cards tells us you're about to or have just in the past 24-48 hours decided to change something in your life in a big way, often times this is a big decision you've made, or in readings for people under 21 it is a typical card to be pulled when they leave the "nest". The Fool in the present tells us you have high hopes for your future, and perhaps a trick or two up your sleeve as well (depending on other cards in the reading).
In the future position it is common for the Fool card to manifest as a big change in your "day-to-day" living and depending on the cards around it signify different things, for instance a lot of Pentacles would suggest you may have a switch of job, or a new job, lots of cups would suggest that you'll be having something new in your life emotionally that brings you joy, Wands being the common card with the Fool in a reading suggest creative/inspirational enhancement, perhaps re-decorating your home and a plethora of swords tells us that you are likely being lied to or deceived, OR depending on the surrounding cards you are the one being deceptive and are harming other people by doing so.
The Fool card is not a bad card, but it's more reassuring to have it behind you then it is to have in your future and as far as the present goes it essentially tells us, "keep your wits about you" or "come back down to earth"! (;
