Valentines day is less then a week away and a lot of us still don't know what to get our lovers. Think about that statement for a second. We still don't know what to get our partners. While that is certainly something in the back of most of our minds right now I think it is time we look at what Valentines day is really all about.
While the feast of St. Valentine is a long standing tradition going back to the middles ages. The modern idea of buying presents spawned in the UK with the story of Jack Valentine knocking on the back door of a house and leaving presents and sweets for children like some sort of romantic Santa Clause.
Why not ignore all the modern tradition and think for a minute about the state our world is in. How often do you tell your love I love you? I feel we are all so scared to say it because we are all afraid of being rejected or that saying I love you is some sort of big commitment. Loving someone is a feeling and a state of mind. I for one have decided I will always express the feeling of love to the person I love no matter how he feels because you never know if you will have another chance. If I am rejected so be it. I am strong enough to handle rejection. Let me let you in on a little secret.... So are you.
So all this mumbo jumbo being accounted for... I feel that rather then worrying about what to get my lover or what he is getting me I would like more then anything the one thing money cant really buy, Time. All I would like on the feast of St. Valentine is to spend some time with my love. Be it at the park on the river, or at dinner, or coffee. Where doesn't really matter. I just want time. Why give all the chocolate sellers, flower vendors, and greeting card makers your hard earned money this year? Jewelry and perfume are nice but none of that can replace the moments we get with the ones we truly love.
