A popular movement today is to participate in a Anti-Valentine's Day Party! This is to rebel against the idea that in order to participate in Valentine's Day you must have a partner....Well let's see..People have rebelled against all forms of tyranny and will continue to do as as long as people exist, which I feel contrary to most doomsday enthusiasts will be for some time to come..yup we got lots of time left. So I am sure we will be faced with many worthwhile causes to put our capes on to crusade against the unjust and support the downtrodden....however just not sure rebelling against Valentine's Day is one of them... :))
The history or origin of Valentine's Day is very far from be filled with kissy-face cupids, roses by the bushel and enough chocolate to almost make me happy but a rather brutal, violent and sexist affair..Maybe that is why women get so many goodies now its to make up for the ancient abuses! It was celebrated first during Early Roman Times during the pagan Feast of Lupercalia held from February 13 to the 15th.. They would sacrifice a goat, poor goats have never had it easy, and a dog. Strip off their hides and beat women with the hides. The men got drunk, of course, and the women lined up like sheep and the men beat them. WOW ... They believed this would make the women fertile. Interesting concept -- since shots of painful medicine didn't improve my fertility any ..hey ya never know...Then, what else they picked the women's names out of a jar and the "lucky" woman got to service that man all night. The Romans really knew how to throw a party! If the truth be known even Hallmark at their most genius could not do much to lighten up this Holiday's origins....
Fast forward to 3 AD the Romans always a happy go lucky bunch and always up for an execution decided to off two men both named Valentine on February 14. They were deemed martyrs by the Catholic Church, gone but not forgotten, hence the celebration of St. Valentine's Day as we know it today..In the 5th Century the Pope when he basically combined the festival of Lupercalia with St Valentine's Day it got more confusing for Christians..The main difference is the they keep their clothes on at least until nightfall much like it is practiced today : ))). We translated it to mean LOVE, ROMANCE and SEX...the consensual kind..and lots of presents usually in little velvet boxes my favorite kind--- next to gobs of chocolate truffles..YEAH... Modern people can sure make everything have a happy ending....lol
So if you want to be Anti-Valentine's Day because they used to beat women, chop up little furry animals and choose women like Pick-Six -- which does really truly suck, I would concur wholeheartedly --- But it no longer represents pagan debauchery -- It celebrates and honors the love we are capable of having for each other...So badly needed in today's society and all over in today's world...How can anyone disrespect the one thing that keeps us safe, secure, inspired and happy -- TRUE LOVE -- so I will celebrate LOVE in all its forms with or without a boyfriend!!!!! I still have -- a mother -- a daughter -- family and friends -- lovely clients and students -- whom I LOVE! So to everyone who holds a place in my heart -- Happy Valentine's Day! God Bless Love Kat
