My "bones" are actually a long-time collection of Important Things. I knew each item was important to me when I found it, and I squirreled these little, strange trinkets into a bundle for more than ten years. Then one day, I learned to read the bones from a friend of mine, Jack Mercer. And when he told us to personalize our process, I realized that my bundle of random, amazing things needed to be part of my set.

The bones, shells, stones and trinkets each have their own story, their own symbolism. Two stones represent the sun and moon, but many other rocks represent different forms of stability and support. A rib bone represents one's support in life, and connects the dots between different influences. A vertebra, in turn, shows when we have made our own support, or found someone we can lean on. Toe bones show when we are simply walking in stride, while an acorn represents new beginnings. My shells represent homes or offices, although one broken piece that shines like the moon speaks of quiet wisdom, or spirituality. A smooth piece of wood is named "a piece of the cross," while a lovely twig is "the tree of life." And all of these pieces and more represent the many pieces of a healthy life, as well as the challenges of real life.
