I love what I do. But many times I encounter clients with some strange, and outright unhealthy ideas about life and the universe. One of the most destructive of these is the idea is that we should somehow dissolve or rid ourselves of our ego.
First, let me assure you that dissolving your ego is an absolute impossibility. And if you continue trying you will make yourself and others around you completely miserable!
Whether the source of your misunderstanding is the mistranslation of an Eastern philosophical concept or a truly ascetic approach matters not. The nature of the universe prohibits this, even in death. So what other possibility is there? You must dealwith it!
That's right; like many other situations in life, your ego, your personal desires for yourself, are something you must learn to balance with the Greater Good. You have a right to create happiness for yourself. You have the power within to be a force for good. But you cannot do that when you constantly leave your own needs unmet. You must be filled in order to fill others. You cannot give them what you do not have, you cannot fill another's cup if yours is empty too.
So please, stop beating yourself up! When you acknowledge and respect your human limitations, they become your strengths.
Have you ever noticed that if you let your needs go long enough, you can no longer serve others? You are not as effective or sharp. The harder you push to be selfless and serve others, the more situations you bungle? This is the phenomena of diminishing returns. The more you push, the less value you get out.
Why not take a break from the world? Go for a short walk. Meditate for a few minutes; heck even half an hour! Watch that Army Wives episode with your 'On Demand' TV. As long as no serious emergency arises, you will come back refreshed and ready to do what you love doing...helping others.
And when you have done that, pat yourself on the back for handling your perfectly natural human needs in a constructive manner; even if no one else sees it.
And for the love of sanity, give up this idea of dissolving your ego! That entire idea is a mistranslation of ancient sacred text anyway! Your ego is a wonderful tool to be used for the Greater Good. Just respect it and you and your ego will get along just fine.
Play nice now.
