True Love vs. Unconditional Love

Over time, the meanings of true love and unconditional love seemed to have merged into one interchangeable meaning.  How I understand it, true love is what every princess that has been tortured by an evil queen is waiting for, and usually they’re singing about itl.  Unconditional love is more the love a parent has for a child.  No matter what happens the love will always be there.

If these terms are merged together, it can cause a few problems.  In relationships, most people have conditions that are expected to be met by the other person.  If your spouse cheats on you, then they can expect that your love will be withdrawn.  Unconditional love means that if you steal a car, rob a bank, and then blame it on me, no matter what, I will still love you.  Pretty much, only a mother could keep the love going in that situation!

I have heard some people add a defining term of being “in love” to qualify unconditional love.  They will always love the two-timing good for nothing cheater, they just aren’t “in love” with them anymore.  Which, sums it up very well.  I understand exactly what that means!  I guess it depends on what the term unconditional love means for the person saying it.  Maybe it would be wise to clarify it’s use with the one you’re saying it, too?
