The Hermit seems like a lonely to many, but it really isn't. While the hermit appears to be alone, he's actually keeping himself company. Around him are the tools of study: the pen and paper, a magnifying glass, books and an atlas. He holds a wand in his right hand and serpent topped staff in his left. In the back ground the Tree of The Knowledge of Good and Evil.
The pen and paper are to record what he has learned so he doesn't forget. The magnifying glass is for examining his belief to see if they are for his highest good or if he needs to let them go. The books show the knowledge he has gathered. The atlas could show a record of his journeys and the experience he has gained. The tree show the metaphorical apples he has eaten in his time.
The hermit uses all these tools to examine, thoughts, experiences, feelings and other things he's learned along the way, in order to understand his beliefs and seek truth. Ah, what truth is he seeking.
This card is telling you it's time to take step away from a situation and examine yourself. Take time to examine what you know, understand and experienced. When you figure out how the whole puzzle fits together then you'll have your answer.
On the flip-side or reversed, you're alone time is either too long, too often or for the wrong reasons. Wrong reasons are avoidance of people, procrastination or putting off a decision will not help you.
