Several years ago, my sister gave me a book called "The Magical Household" by Scott Cunningham and David Harrington. This book is full of great ideas and I've learned tons from it. One of my favorite passages describes a house blessing. This ritual is simple, inexpensive and very effective and can be used whenever you want to replenish the mantle of positive energy and protection that surrounds your home. Here's how you do it:
Set your alarm early enough that you wake up at dawn. Get out of bed and immediately light some incense...doesn't matter what kind you use. Do not turn on the television, radio, or internet because you want the house to be as silent as possible while you do this ritual. Walk slowly through every room in your home, carrying the lit incense with you, and say the following words while focusing on their meaning and intent:
"House of stone,
metal,
wood and earth;
silent one,
protective one,
you of the four winds;
house of health,
wealth,
joy and peace;
guardian,
sustainer,
you of the Earth;
house of stone,
metal,
wood and earth,
secure one,
peaceful one,
you of the charm,
guarded and protected you be,
cleansed and pure you be,
peaceful and loving you be.
It is finished in beauty.
It is finished in beauty.
It is finished in beauty."
Now, put down the incense and draw a picture of your house. It doesn't matter if you're a good artist or not. What matters is that you draw as accurate a picture of your home as possible. If you live in a condo or apartment, draw the entire building. Draw it from above, below, and from each side - draw it from as many angles as possible. When you have finished and the drawing is as accurate as you can make it, it's time for the next step.
You will need a white candle and a sharp knife. Use the knife to cut seven notches in the candle. Place the drawing on your altar, table, windowsill, kitchen counter - anyplace with a flat surface. Make sure it's someplace where the drawing can sit for 7 days without being disturbed. Now, place the notched candle on a plate or candle holder and center it on top of the drawing you made. Visualize your home as safe, warm, loving, and blessed while lighting the candle. Let the candle burn down one notch, then snuff it out.
Repeat the dawn walk through of your home and the lighting of the candle every day for one week. On the 7th day, after the candle has burned itself completely out, fold the drawing as tightly as possible and secure it with a red or white cord or ribbon. Place it in a wooden box with a handful of salt and some dried flower petals. The book suggests roses, but I don't think it matters, as long as you choose a flower that you love. Tie the box firmly with more cord or ribbon and hide it somewhere in your home.
